Introduction
There was a time when success was illuminated by the light of good character. Today, it is often overshadowed by the glitter of wealth. A person’s greatness was once recognized through knowledge, piety, honesty, and service to humanity. Now, success is frequently measured by bank balances, luxury cars, grand houses, social media popularity, and material comforts.
Although the definition of success has changed, this change has not brought peace. Wealth has increased, yet hearts have become restless. Fame has grown, yet loneliness has deepened. Comforts have multiplied, but true contentment has become increasingly rare. The reason is simple: many people are searching for success where it was never meant to be found.
The Qur’anic Standard of Success
The Noble Qur’an presents a timeless definition of success. Allah Almighty says:
﴿وَإِنَّمَا تُوَفَّوْنَ أُجُورَكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ۖ فَمَنْ زُحْزِحَ عَنِ النَّارِ وَأُدْخِلَ الْجَنَّةَ فَقَدْ فَازَ﴾
Translation:
“You will only be given your full reward on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever is kept away from the Fire and admitted into Paradise has truly succeeded.”
(Surah Āl ‘Imrān, Verse 185)
This single verse overturns every worldly standard of success. If wealth alone were true success, Qārūn (Korah) would have been the greatest success story. If power were the true measure, Fir’awn (Pharaoh) would not have become a lesson for humanity. If fame alone guaranteed success, history would remember tyrants with honor.
The Qur’an makes it clear that real success is the success that leads to salvation in the Hereafter.
The Characteristics of True Success
Allah Almighty also declares:
﴿قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنِ اللَّغْوِ مُعْرِضُونَ وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِلزَّكَاةِ فَاعِلُونَ وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَافِظُونَ﴾
Translation:
“Successful indeed are the believers: those who are humble in their prayers, who turn away from idle talk, who are committed to giving charity, and who guard their chastity.”
(Surah Al-Mu’minūn, Verses 1–5)
These verses remind us that success is not defined by possessions or popularity. It is built upon faith, sincere worship, good character, and obedience to Allah.
Three Principles of Success from the Sunnah
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Successful is the one who embraces Islam, is provided with sufficient sustenance, and is content with what Allah has granted him.”
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1054)
This beautiful hadith highlights three essential principles of true success:
(1) Faith in Islam
Yet many people search for success in materialism and worldly lifestyles instead of finding it through submission to Allah.
(2) Sufficient Lawful Provision
Many spend their entire lives endlessly chasing more wealth, believing that happiness lies in having just a little more.
(3) Contentment (Qanā’ah)
True success also lies in being grateful for Allah’s blessings and remaining patient during hardship. Unfortunately, many people fail to appreciate what Allah has already granted them and struggle to remain patient when tested.
These three qualities bring peace to the heart regardless of how much worldly wealth a person possesses.
Have We Adopted the Wrong Standard?
Sadly, modern education and society often reinforce this mistaken definition of success.
Children are frequently asked:
“What do you want to become when you grow up?”
A doctor, an engineer, a businessperson, or a government officer.
Rarely are they asked:
“When will you become a good human being?”
Professional achievement has become the goal, while character has been pushed into the background. Yet every society needs not only skilled professionals but also honest, trustworthy, and morally upright individuals.
Redefining Success
It is time to rethink our understanding of success.
If our prayers are established, our parents are pleased with us, our income is lawful, our speech is truthful, our dealings are honest, and obedience to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ shapes our lives, then we are truly successful—even if the world considers us ordinary.
On the other hand, if these blessings are absent, no amount of wealth, fame, or social status can hide our real loss.
Conclusion
Success is not merely about reaching a destination; it is about choosing the right path.
The path that leads to the pleasure of Allah is the path of true success. A road that ends only in worldly gain, no matter how attractive it appears, ultimately leads to disappointment.
Let us redefine our standards before it is too late. Worldly success is temporary, but the success of the Hereafter is everlasting.
May Allah Almighty grant us the ability to understand these truths, act upon them, and make true success our ultimate goal.
